Background of the study
Agriculture forms the backbone of many Nigerian communities, yet climate variability poses substantial risks to crop productivity. In Iseyin, fluctuating weather patterns and erratic rainfall have led to inconsistent agricultural yields. Recent studies (Ogunleye, 2023; Fashina, 2024) document how changes in temperature, precipitation, and extreme weather events directly influence crop health and soil fertility. This study investigates the interplay between climate variability and agricultural performance by reviewing historical weather data, local farming practices, and adaptation strategies. It examines how farmers cope with uncertainty through diversified cropping systems, irrigation methods, and the use of resilient crop varieties. Emphasis is placed on understanding the socio-economic ramifications for rural communities whose livelihoods depend on agriculture. Furthermore, the study explores governmental and non-governmental initiatives aimed at mitigating climate risks. By linking climate science with agricultural practices, the research seeks to provide actionable insights into improving yield stability and promoting sustainable farming in Iseyin (Ogunleye, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Iseyin’s agricultural sector is increasingly vulnerable to climate variability, which disrupts crop production and affects food security. Erratic rainfall and temperature fluctuations have led to inconsistent yields and increased farming costs. Despite various adaptation measures, many farmers continue to experience losses. The disconnect between climate predictions and local agricultural practices highlights a need for research on tailored adaptation strategies. This study seeks to address the gap in knowledge regarding the specific impacts of climate variability on crop performance and to propose viable solutions that can enhance resilience in Iseyin’s agricultural practices (Fashina, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To analyze the relationship between climate variability and agricultural yield.
To identify adaptive practices among local farmers.
To recommend strategies for mitigating climate impacts on agriculture.
Research questions:
How does climate variability affect crop yield in Iseyin?
What adaptive measures are currently practiced by farmers?
Which strategies can enhance agricultural resilience?
Research Hypotheses:
Climate variability significantly reduces agricultural yield.
Adoption of adaptive practices positively influences yield outcomes.
Targeted intervention programs can mitigate adverse climate effects.
Significance of the study
The study’s findings will inform agricultural policymakers and extension agents about the critical link between climate variability and crop performance. By identifying effective adaptation strategies, the research may lead to enhanced food security and sustainable agricultural practices in Iseyin, ultimately benefiting rural livelihoods (Ogunleye, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of climate variability on agricultural yield in Iseyin Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Climate Variability: Short-term variations in climatic conditions that affect weather patterns (Fashina, 2024).
Agricultural Yield: The amount of crop produced per unit area (Ogunleye, 2023).
Adaptation Strategies: Practices adopted to minimize the negative impacts of climate change (Fashina, 2024).
